AppleTalk Services for MPE/iX
Prototype Demonstration
for
Interex '92
This demonstration of AppleTalk Services for MPE/iX shows the HP 3000
as a platform for the future integration of MPE into the expanding
Macintosh computer networked environment. AppleTalk/iX creates a native
AppleShare compatible file server on MPE/iX. The HP 3000 is mounted as a
remote server volume on the desktop of a Ethernet connected Macintosh
computer. AppleTalk and AppleShare client services are built into all
models of the Macintosh computer.
o Macintosh Desktop Integration. MPE/iX as an AppleShare compatible file
server appears on the desktop of the Macintosh computer. MPE and POSIX
files and directories under the mounted directory path are accessable to
Macintosh applications and utilities as icons and folders. Macintosh
files and applications can be stored on the MPE file server for remote
access by Macintosh computers.
o MPE/iX Integration. Files stored by Macintosh users on the AppleTalk/iX
server can be accessed by any commands, utilities, and applications
supported in the POSIX environment. MPE applications will be able to
manipulate files stored by the Macintosh on the server. AppleTalk/iX
files are backed up by the standard MPE backup and restore facilities.
o Multimedia from MPE/iX. Use the Macintoshφs proven multimedia
capabilities with MPE/iXφs proven data storage and management. We can
meet your multimedia data requirements ranging from storage of still
pictures to real time display of full motion QuickTime videos.
o Client/Server Application Program Interfaces. AppleTalk/iX will include
API libraries for value added businesses and end users to develop
integrated client/server applications between the Macintosh and the HP
3000 family of applications.
o Ease of Use. The same ease of file manipulation and application linking
you expect from your native Macintosh server is available on AppleTalk
Services for MPE/iX.
o Open Technology Leadership. AppleTalk/iX incorporates the latest in open
development technologies from HP in the form of Streams and POSIX.
Utilities and applications which are POSIX aware will be able to
directly access files stored by Macintosh computers on the HP 3000.
o Integration of Personal Computers into MPE/iX. AppleTalk/iX, along with
Netware/iX and LAN Manager/iX provide a complete solution for
integrating the HP 3000 into your network operating system of choice.
o Product Availability. AppleTalk Services for MPE/iX will be available
for customer shipment in mid 1993.
